Council Duties: Civic Engagement

Council meetings which are scheduled the first and third Mondays of each month are only a snapshot of Council duties.  Regional duties, budgets, policy and goals, commissioner interviews, performance reviews, legal matters and employee compensation are just some examples of other duties, including:

  • Vice Mayor, City of Burlingame
  • Vice President  SamTrans Board of Directors:  Jerry was elected by a vote of San Mateo County’s twenty mayors to this position which oversees our fixed-route and paratransit bus service in San Mateo County and parts of San Francisco and Palo Alto. www.samtrans.com
  • Joint Powers Board (Caltrain) Board of Directors: On June 24, 2011 Jerry was elected by a vote of San Mateo County’s twenty mayors to this position. The Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board, which owns and operates Caltrain, consists of representatives from San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties.   For the first time Burlingame has representation on this powerful board.  www.caltrain.com
  • Burlingame Economic Development Committee, Member:  Fostering a business friendly environment and cooperation is the intent of this team.  Businesses’ furnish much of the tax base that allows Burlingame to offer their great services.   www.burlingame.org.
  • City / Schools Liaison committee: serves as a vehicle for communication between the City of Burlingame and its schools.  www.burlingame.org
  • Budget Responsibilities:  Overseeing the budget for the City Attorney, City Council, City Manager, Finance Department and Human Resources.  www.burlingame.org
  • Central County Fire Board, Board Member: On April 20, 2004 under a Joint Powers Agreement (JPA) fire services in the City of Burlingame and the Town of Hillsborough were merged to create the Central County Fire Department.  www.burlingame.org
  • High Speed Rail:  Policy working group Burlingame representative
  • Fire ALS Join Powers Authority:  In 1977, San Mateo County, American Medical Response (AMR) and local fire jurisdictions joined in a collaborative public/private partnership for Advanced Life Support (ALS) services including paramedic first response, ambulance transport and automatic aid between fire departments to provide improved emergency medical care to the citizens of Burlingame and San Mateo County.  www.burlingame.org
  • Grand Boulevard Task Force, Board Member:  The Grand Boulevard is a collaboration of 19 cities, counties, local and regional agencies, united to improve the performance, safety and aesthetics of El Camino Real,  bringing together for the first time all of the agencies having responsibility for condition, use and performance of El Camino.   www.grandboulevard.net
  • Peninsula Congestion Relief Alliance, Board Member:  Our congested freeways are a source of pollution and many wasted hours commuting.  The Alliance mission is to reduce the number of single occupant vehicles traveling in, to or through San Mateo County and reducing vehicle emissions to improve air quality.  www.commute.org
  • Project Advisory Committee for Sub-Regional Housing Needs Allocation  (Comprehensive Land Use Plan):  www.abag.ca.gov
