Schools

Schools: Our public and private schools, of which we have many, are the foundation for building a great community.   I along with my wife, Joann Johnson-Deal (over 25 years as a Franklin Elementary School teacher) have committed ourselves to helping in any way we can.

BCE:  Jerry has supported BCE for over 20 years with financial support, auction items and attending the dinner dance:  This year along with cash donations  we will be hosting a dinner for eight in our home with the proceeds going to BCE.

GameOn:  With State revenues in question and budget cuts threatening our schools BCE has joined with the PTA’S of all schools to launch GAME ON BURLINGAME!  Jerry was proud to have donated $1,000.

Franklin Elementary School: Jerry was the Master of ceremonies for the Franklin Carnival the last 2 years.

Rotary:   Jerry along with fellow Rotarians, each year, personally delivers hundreds of picture dictionaries to every third grader, in both public and private schools in Burlingame.  The dictionaries are theirs         to keep and take home.  We spend about a half hour in each classroom and talk about community service.  The kids eagerly await the dictionaries to arrive.

Roosevelt Elementary Saved:  When Jerry was a member of the Planning             Commission, Roosevelt School was saved due to his forward thinking and common sense solution.  The district wanted to convert Roosevelt into district offices.  Jerry’s solution was simple:  the District should purchase an office building and leave Roosevelt Elementary alone.  With Jerry’s direction the district  purchased the building they now occupy on Trousdale.  With our increased enrollment,  imagine if Roosevelt had been lost to the district offices.  This was forward thinking.

City/Schools Liaison Committee:  Jerry is a member of this committee which serves as a vehicle for communication between the City of Burlingame and its schools.

Last year Jerry’s wife, JoAnn Johnson-Deal ran the phone bank for the parcel tax with a lot of help from Jerry, contributing many hours on the phone.  The result…..the parcel tax passed by a much larger than needed majority. I talk with many parents in Burlingame and our Schools are often cited as the reason for moving to Burlingame and that after moving here they fall in love with our life here.
